The U.S. Navy has named Cmdr. Gabriel Edwards as the sailor who went missing when an MH‑60S Seahawk from the carrier USS George H.W. Bush made an emergency landing in the Arabian Sea on July 1. Edwards was the commanding officer of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 5 and had been slated for promotion to captain.
Four crew members were aboard; three survived and were recovered, while Edwards was not found. The search stretched over 102 hours and covered roughly 14,000 square miles, involving five destroyers, carrier‑based fixed‑wing aircraft, two P‑8 Poseidon squadrons and additional Air Force assets. The Navy’s 5th Fleet said there was no sign of hostile action.
Edwards, a veteran with more than 2,000 flight hours, was posthumously promoted to captain. His wife Rebecca and their two children survived him, and the Navy released statements praising his leadership and offering support to his family. An investigation into the mishap remains ongoing.
