Germany has agreed to purchase ground-launched Tomahawk cruise missiles from the United States, significantly enhancing its long-range strike capabilities. The move is part of NATO's efforts to counter Russia's growing military presence in Europe.
The acquisition marks a major shift in NATO's conventional strike posture, with Germany seeking to develop its own European systems and station them in Europe. The Tomahawk missiles will provide Germany with a range exceeding 1,000 miles, far surpassing its current longest-range indirect fires capability.

The purchase is seen as a temporary solution until domestically developed long-range weapons become available. Germany is also part of the European Long-Range Strike Approach (ELSA) initiative, aiming to develop a new long-range strike capability by the 2030s.
