The Army has launched a food truck at Fort Shafter in Hawaii to provide meals for its 500 soldiers. The base has not had a dining facility since 2012, leaving soldiers with limited options. The food truck, called the Culinary Outpost, offers meals that follow Army nutritional standards, including customizable bowl meals for different diets.
The truck is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and meals cost between $7 and $10. Soldiers can also buy vacuum-sealed meals to refrigerate for later. The Army has dubbed the area a 'food desert' due to the lack of convenient and affordable food options.
The introduction of the food truck is a response to the concerns raised by soldiers about the limited dining options on the base. The Army is also transforming the old dining hall into a new campus-style dining venue, similar to those at Fort Hood and Fort Drum.
